Eighteen students from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford’s Environmental Science program toured the Bradford Sanitary Authority on Seaward Avenue last week.

The Bradford Sanitary Authority hosted a facility tour last week for 18 students and two Instructors from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.

The tour, which was requested by Ovidiu D. Frantescu, PhD. Engineering and Program Director of Environmental Science at UPB, was conducted at the Authority’s wastewater treatment facility at 410 Seaward Ave. in Bradford.

The participating students were Environmental Science students at UPB with some students having additional focuses on Biology and Geology.

The facility tour conducted by Plant Foreman and Certified Wastewater Operator, Matthew Mongillo, consisted of a review of the entire operational process, including headworks, Conventional Activated Sludge and Sequential Batch Reactor treatment trains, digesters, disinfection and reed bed sludge dewatering.

Incidentally, University of Pittsburgh at Bradford students were instrumental in the initial planting of the reed beds used for sludge dewatering at the Authority site back in 2019.

“Those reed beds are now flourishing and are a true model for the industry,” said Bradford City Water Authority Executive Director Steve Disney.

The students were encouraged and challenged to pursue careers in wastewater and water operations, as the Country is seeing a severe labor shortage in backfilling the many open positions across the nation in these vital industries.

Groups interested in facility tours in the future can make arrangements by calling (814) 368-7105.
